Baseball Trip Wrap Up

June 21, 2011 - 8:06 pm

Our annual baseball trip has been over for a week, and I have been too lazy to update. We finished up our trip with two days in Detroit and three days in Toronto. Detroit was easily the worst place I have ever visited. I was naive to think that all of the horror stories I've heard about it were exaggerated, but I can confirm that they are indeed true. We stayed in the Westin renovated Book-Cadillac hotel and it was wonderful. The rest of downtown seemed incredibly deserted, with so many abandoned glorious skyscrapers in the process of decay, that I wasn't all that interested in seeing the city. Toronto on the other hand was wonderful. We stayed right on the harbor, which was in walking distance of just about everything. I hope to make it back there sometime.

Since we weren't really interested in seeing much of Detroit after forming our opinion on our drive into the city, we ended up spending most of our time hanging out in the hotel, using the gym, and watching Netflix. Comerica Park is one of eight participating ballparks featuring a Food Network Celebrity Chef created meal, so I made sure to try it out. They had 3 varieties, one pork and two beef. I tried the Signature Steak Sandwich with Blue Cheese and Peppadew Mayonnaise. There aren't pictures for this one, sorry.

Besides seeing a lot more of Toronto than we did of Detroit, we also did a much better job of eating our way through the city. My sister and her friend made the mistake of allowing me to select dinner on Friday night, so I naturally selected Beer Bistro, a restaurant that featured beer integrated into just about every recipe, including ice cream. I loved everything about this place, but I'll just talk about the best - beerscream: Dragon stout with skor bar & rocky road with coffee porter. I am completely inspired and I will make beerscream before I die. Saturday night we went to Great Burger Kitchen courtesy of Groupon. I had the daily special burger which had bacon and tried poutine for the first time. I'm not inclined to have it again. Not because it wasn't delicious but because I think eating just a few bites may have taken a couple of years off my life.

And finally, the ballpark. By the time Sunday rolled around I had felt like enough of a glutton that I didn't overeat like I usually do at a game. I had a gigantic hot dog topped with baked beans, cheddar, and Canadian bacon. It was a delicious hot dog, but it would have been great without the toppings. It is surely one of the best wieners I've had.
